The "10" Servant Event
| Shawn has developed a 1-day servant event designed to
empower young people to tithe not only "Ten" percent of their financial
resources, but also to tithe one of the most precious commodities to us in
the United States…ten percent of our time…in service to God by serving the
needs of His people. |
|
The
event is designed to bring young people together through music and small-group
ministry, have them study servant-hood as it relates to the Word, and put the
Word into practice by doing local service projects. This event works best as an
ecumenical, area-wide event.
Essentially the schedule is 9-6 on Saturday with the concert at 7 open to the
entire community. Often the event will end with a lock-in on Sat evening, then
worship on Sun morning with the youth helping to "serve" during worship, and
help Shawn lead some songs as well.
All that the host congregation has to provide is 1 adult/10 kids to serve as
small group leaders which are trained on Sat morning by Shawn, and line up the
local service projects for 3 hours in the afternoon on Saturday. It’s also helpful to have a
college-aged person
or two to lead some games throughout the day. The host congregation is also
responsible for promoting the event, setting a fee, and registration. Everything
else is programming Shawn has developed: large group singing, keynote talks, and
small group materials.
The afternoon is spent doing local service projects set up by the host
congregation. Typical projects are a food or clothing drive for the needy in the
community, cleaning and repairing homes for elderly, singing and visiting
hospitals or nursing homes, and yard work or winterizing homes. These projects
are designed for youth to feel empowered by: putting their faith into action by
serving the needs of others, by being faithful about tithing the firstfruits of
their time, and by accomplishing a great deal for the kingdom of God, in a very
short amount of time.
Since his return from India in 2000, Shawn has successfully used these local
servant events, and stories and songs from India, to inspire young people and
old alike to serve in their own communities.
